February 21, 2026 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Unit blocks were created in the early 1900’s and are still one of children’s favorite materials. Why has such simple materials been able to hold children’s attention and focus even in the age of screens, legos and other modern toys? What opportunities and possibilities do blocks offer children and teachers? This two-part workshop will explore the magic of blocks, and support teachers in developing skills to create a strong culture of block building in their classrooms. Participants will: Learn about the history of block play Discuss the benefits of block play for children from 0 through 5 Explore different types of blocks Study block play stories Reflect on their own classrooms and find ways to reconnect with the joys of offering blocks as tools for learning Familiarize themselves with schema theory and learn about how to use this knowledge to see children’s competence through their block play creations
